The Investment–Time–Value (ITV) Framework is a general framework for classifying systems based on the tradeoffs they are willing to make. Whether designing an AI system, managing a business, optimizing a manufacturing process, or making personal decisions, every system operates under three fundamental dimensions:
Investment — The resources consumed, including money, labor, energy, materials, computation, attention, or risk.
Time — The duration required to achieve an outcome.
Value — The utility produced, measured as quality, performance, profit, impact, fitness, or any domain-specific objective.
The central question of the ITV Framework is not how to optimize all three dimensions simultaneously. Instead, it asks: Which dimension is the system most willing to compromise?
Analyze engineering and architectural tradeoffs.
Design AI systems with explicit optimization priorities.
Evaluate operational and process improvement strategies.
Communicate tradeoff philosophies across stakeholders.
