The Decision Alert Design (DAD) Framework provides a structured approach for designing alerts that maximize decision value rather than simply reacting to threshold violations. Instead of asking "Did the KPI exceed a limit?", DAD asks two more fundamental questions:
Should this situation be managed through alerts at all?
If so, what level of interruption is justified?
If so, how should this alert be communicated?
The first layer determines whether alerting is the appropriate management mechanism. Many recurring business conditions are better addressed through automation, process redesign, or structural improvements than by repeatedly notifying people.
DAD evaluates six design dimensions:
Frequency – How often is the condition expected to occur?
Alert Response Cost – What is the cost of responding to one alert?
Alerting Cost – What organizational cost is incurred by choosing Alerting as the solution?
Structural Fix Feasibility – Can the underlying problem be permanently addressed through process or system improvements?
Detectability – Can the condition be detected reliably with sufficient confidence?
Ownership Clarity – Is there a clearly identified owner responsible for responding?
These dimensions help determine whether alerting is the right solution—or whether the organization should instead automate, redesign, or eliminate the underlying issue.
Question: How worthy is this event of organizational attention?
This layer evaluates the inherent characteristics of the event, independent of any communication channel. Four dimensions guide this assessment:
Business Impact – What are the consequences of inaction?
Urgency – How quickly must a decision be made?
Decisionability – Does the alert naturally lead to a clear, actionable decision?
System Responsiveness – To what extent can intervention improve the outcome?
These dimensions determine the appropriate alert mechanism, ranging from dashboard notifications and email to direct messages, personal notifications, or managerial escalation.
Question: How should this alert be communicated?
This layer converts alert worthiness into an appropriate communication mechanism. Dimensions:
Urgency Weight — How quickly must the recipient notice the alert?
Impact Weight — How much organizational authority or seriousness should the alert convey?
The DAD Framework shifts alert design from threshold-based monitoring to decision-driven attention management. By distinguishing between whether an alert should exist and how disruptive it should be, organizations can reduce alert fatigue, improve operational focus, and ensure that human attention is reserved for situations where intervention creates meaningful value.
