Decision Opportunity Representation (DOOR) is a framework for formally representing decision opportunities—the situations in which an agent has the ability to deliberately impact the environment.
Decision: A deliberate commitment to a course of action that impacts the environment.
Decision Opportunity: A chance to deliberately impact the environment. Decision opportunities may be: One-time or Repeatable.
Decision Opportunity Representation (DOR): A formal representation of a Decision Opportunity, including the environmental conditions and stakeholder characteristics that define the opportunity.
Risk Profile: The stakeholder's willingness to accept uncertainty while pursuing their objectives.
Investment Profile: The amount of stakeholder resources allocated to the decision opportunity. Investment may include time, money, computational resources, data collection, analysis, human expertise, or organizational attention. High-investment opportunities typically receive richer information, deeper analysis, and more sophisticated decision support than low-investment opportunities.
Status Quo Analysis: Formalize how decisions are currently made by representing the existing architecture surrounding repeatable decision opportunities.
Decision Architecture Improvement: Evaluate the current architecture of a repeatable decision opportunity to identify gaps for improvement.
Surgical Decision Improvements: Make targeted modifications to specific elements of the architecture around a repeatable decision opportunity, such as improving available data, adjusting responses to triggers, refining information quality, or changing stakeholder investment.
Decision Architecture Redesign: Design entirely new architecture for a new repeatable decision opportunity or restructure existing ones.
